The Embedded series consists of found fabric with thread forced into the weave to create a drawing. The drawings relate back to the Altered series, an ongoing body of work between myself and Indian Rafoogars (darners.) In this new series, I translated homes into abstracted forms, focusing mostly on the additions made to these homes. I find these additions to be significant manifestations of change to the family structure. The families are adapting their structure to fit their current needs. These structures are the inspiration for the shapes that are darned and inlaid in my work.

In Swap, a subset of the Embedded series, threads are removed and then swapped with threads from another cloth. As with most of my work, it shifts between the personal/domestic and the political/global. I left the edges of the fabric raw and loose, asking the question “how can we reweave the edges?” As Latour asks in his book Down to Earth, “How can we repair what is becoming unraveled? Can we? When is the shift so great either personally or politically that we are irrevocably altered?”
